There are scientifically proven benefits to growing plants at home. Studies have shown that houseplants can improve your mood, reduce tiredness, decrease stress, and more. There’s also the fact that they can look great!

Houseplants are associated with some less tangible benefits, too. Certain plants symbolize good luck in some religions and beliefs, for example. Many people believe that adding lucky plants to the home will ensure they lead a charmed life.

Followers of feng shui and Vastu Shastra are notable believers in the power of plants to bring positive (and negative) energy into the home.

I’ve put together the following list of good luck plants according to feng shui, Vasta, and other beliefs and superstitions. I can’t promise they’ll prove lucky for you, but I certainly hope they do!

Palms

Several plant species are known as palms. Most of the ones that make suitable houseplants are lucky plants, according to feng shui. Their natural tropical feel brings positive energy into the home, and their size makes them perfect dividers to help direct the flow of energy.

Palms are also good at cleaning the air from dust particles and some harmful toxins.

Money Trees

Money trees (Pachira aquatica) are resilient and reasonably easy to grow. They’re among the best large indoor plants and would look great in the corner of most rooms. They also bring good luck according to both feng shui and Vastu.

As you might have guessed from the name, money trees are a good omen for wealth. Many associate them with good health, too, especially when their leaves have more than five fingers.

Lucky Bamboo

Lucky bamboo has symbolized good fortune in Asian cultures for years. In China it is often given as a gift to bring good luck to the recipient. The type of luck depends on the number of stalks on the plant.

  • Two stalks double the luck of the recipient and can also be an expression of love.
  • Three stalks bring three types of luck; happiness, long life, and wealth.
  • Five stalks improve health in five areas; physical, mental, spiritual, emotional, and intuitive.
  • Six stalks bring greater prosperity.
  • Seven stalks mean better health.
  • Eight stalks increase fertility.
  • Nine stalks are for great luck.
  • Ten stalks bring contentment to the recipient.
  • 21 stalks bestow a very powerful overall blessing.

According to feng shui, lucky bamboo generates great positivity and brings the most luck when placed in the east or southeast. This plant is a species in the dracaena genus and is very easy to maintain as a houseplant.

Snake Plants

Snake plants are a dracaena species, too. Their scientific name is Dracaena trifasciata, and they grow very well as houseplants.

Vastu followers believe snake plants bring good luck when placed in suitable locations, but opinion is split in feng shui. Although some followers believe that snake plants are lucky plants, some believe that they are bad luck plants.

Orchids

Orchids are among the most coveted ornamental plants. Exotic and graceful, these plants represent love and beauty and make for great gifts. Many people also believe they bring good luck, including followers of Vastu and feng shui.

Although orchids have a reputation as being difficult to look after, several types are relatively easy to grow with the proper care. Swan orchids are a great example and make for stunning houseplants.

Jade Plants

I love the small, rounded leaves on jade plants. It’s these leaves that feng shui followers associate with good luck and prosperity due to their resemblance to coins. In some cultures, Jade plants are popular gifts for starting a new business.

Jade plants are very low-maintenance plants that love the sun. They’ll flourish in most conditions as long as they get enough sunlight.

Tulsi

Tulsi, or holy basil, is a sacred plant in Hinduism. Vastu Shastra is based on Hindu philosophy, so the plant is also popular among Vastu followers. They believe the plant is lucky and brings happiness and prosperity.

Parts of the tulsi plant have various health benefits and medicinal uses.

Peace Lilies

Peace lilies are lucky plants according to both Vastu and feng shui. Vastu followers believe peace lilies also repel negative energy and are best kept in the bedroom. Feng shui followers believe good luck comes from the plant’s flowers while the leaves attract wealth.

Warning:  Peace lilies are toxic to cats, dogs, and other animals. They’re unlikely to kill your pets but can cause diarrhea, vomiting, and other unpleasant symptoms.

Rubber Plants

I’m a big fan of rubber plants. I really like the way they look, especially their shiny leaves. The fact that they might bring some good luck is a bonus. You should place these plants in the corner of a room according to feng shui, and in the southeast of any living space according to Vastu.

Rubber plants also make good air purifiers and can increase humidity. They’re pretty low maintenance, too.

Boston Fern

There are several reasons to grow Boston fern plants. They’re attractive, easy to keep healthy with the right care, and good for controlling moisture levels in your home. They’re also lucky plants, according to Vastu and feng shui.

Boston ferns are a great choice if you’re looking for lucky plants to put in hanging baskets or planters. They look fabulous as hanging plants and can transform any space.

Top Tip: Boston fern plants can grow quite large when they hang. Make sure you put them in an appropriately sized hanging planter or basket.

Spider Plants

The spider plant’s long and sturdy vines symbolize stability in some eastern cultures. According to feng shui, the plant is also a symbol of good luck and can remove negative energy while adding positivity.

Vastu principles state that spider plants bring happiness and prosperity as well as good luck. They need to be placed correctly, though, ideally in the north of a house.

Other Plants to Grow at Home

Deciding which plants to grow at home is not easy. While some plants make more sense to grow than others, there’s no definitively correct way to make a choice. There are over 300,000 known plant species to choose from and many different factors to consider.

Whether you truly believe that plants can bring good luck or not, picking a few of the above lucky plants for your home is not the worst idea. There are other ways to choose, too, though.
